I LOVE pens!

When I was younger, I developed a love for pens. That was my favorite thing to buy at the store. I would stand in the office supplies aisle forever trying to decide which pen(s) I wanted most. The cooler, the better.

I adored gel pens.
I loved the simple BIC pens.
Calligraphy pens made me happy inside.
Pens with grips, pen/pencil combos, medium pens, fine pens, multi-colored pens... I just loved them all.

Before school, I'd carefully pack my pencil case with... pens. I'd grab the occasional pencil for math class, but for everything else, I needed a pen!

In middle school, we did a fundraiser selling pens, and I got a special green one with my name engraved on it in gold. I LOVED it. It was my favorite. One day, it was gone. It must have fallen out in the school cafeteria. I was devastated.

In high school, my friend Amanda gave me a space pen. (SOOOO COOL!!) It could write in any direction and under water. It, and the rest of my pencil case, was stolen from the band hall. I still miss that pen. (And if I ever go to the Space Center in Houston, I'm going to buy at least three. I've even thought about taking my future family there just so I can get a space pen or two.)

When Carly went to London with her family, she brought back an English pen. (The ink flowed brilliantly!)

So how does this affect me now?

Well... in Relief Society, I always pass around the roll with one of my pens. They are rarely anything fancy, but I hate to lose them.

So, each week, before I pass the roll and my (well-loved) pen around, I always, always, without even thinking about it, tell the girls why I love that particular pen so much, and beg them to make sure it gets back to me.

And I do it every week. No matter how boring the pen is, it has a story. And I never have to sit and think about why I love that pen. It just rolls right off my tongue. I'm half-way through the story before I even realize that I'm telling it.

It's kind of become the Relief Society joke...

When I got home today, there was a present for me sitting on the table. Some of the girls anonymously bought me some multi-colored pens! I left the note at home, but it said something like, "We just thought we'd get you these pens so that you wouldn't have to worry about losing them anymore." The rest was a really sweet note telling me how much they appreciated me.

It was so nice!! I laughed out loud when I read their card. It was SO thoughtful of them.

So to my anonymous friends out there, thank you so much. It's not just the pens that I appreciate, but the kind thought behind them. You just made my week! Thank you!!!

Is Karen obsessed with pens? Yes. Do I remember her standing in line looking at a wall of pens like they were diamond rings? Yes. Do I remember the space pen? Yes, and I'm kind of sad it's gone too... That is so sweet those girls would give you those pens. Hmmm.... Maybe I should try this trick at the bank. Do you think my customers will stop taking my pens if I tell them they are special?

Karen, I have to say that I have a little of this in me, too. I love pens and I've always been drawn to them in office supply stores or even Costco. I like pens all around me too. I can't even talk on the phone without having a pen in my hand. So I guess this means your children will be getting this trait from both sides of the family. :)

Well, I am a pen lover as well.
However, I believe I may be a bit of a pen snob. I like good flowing pens. I like pretty colored pens. In Italy I fell in love with some really yummy scented pens that had the best flow to them. I have never found any like them again. I have a pen with a mini-cooper that floats in it...shocking, I know!
I do love office supplies, pens and pretty paper are my fav's. Well, and now that they have come out with such cute binders, folders and file folders, I am having a hard time getting out of the office supply areas and stores...it is all so pretty and overwhelming!
Does your mom share the same love, or is this a Rich thing?

You know Aunt Mar, I think that Mom appreciates a good pen, but I don't know that she loves them the way I do. It might just be a Rich thing after all...

And scented pens!? Too cool. Too cool.
