Tuesday - Safe Travel and the Victory Tangerine

On Tuesday, the Provo Heasleys left Provo to travel to California for Thanksgiving. Originally, our plan had been to leave at about 3 PM and drive the 12 hours to CA in (mostly) darkness. But as we were discussing our traveling plans on Sunday, we thought it would be best for us to go ahead and leave as early as we could on Tuesday. So, we ended up getting out of town around 10 AM and made it to our destination by 8:30 (CA time). Which is really good.

But the best part of our journey came as we crossed the border into California.

For those of you who do not know, California guards their borders fiercely, lest any fruit or vegetables be smuggled in to the state and somehow lead to the decimation of the entire crop of every kind in California.

When we left Provo in the morning, McKay and McKenna purchased some tangerines for us to eat as we drove, but the day wore on, and only one of four tangerines were eaten. When we got to the California border, our remaining tangerines were confiscated.

At least, we though our remaining tangerines were confiscated. Turns out we had a rogue tangerine that decided to stay behind. (We found the little guy when we next stopped for gas, I think.

Now, it has been a goal of mine to sneak a fruit into California since I first heard about this ridiculous fruit seizure from my friend Charlie a few years ago. But here's the thing--I've never been able to do it. Either I haven't had fruit with me, or, like this time at the border, I just couldn't lie to the guard. (2 Nephi 9:34 "Wo unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell." Besides, even tiny lies/white lies make me feel guilty.)

But this little tangerine took care of the problem for me. I thought we had handed over our fruit, and gave the guard the truth to the best of my knowledge.

The fact that we honestly snuck in a tangerine--I consider a blessing for being truthful.

Bonus: McKenna's apple pie recipe called for orange zest and orange juice. We used our victory tangerine. Victory will taste GOOD.

LOL!! I love it. I love your Victory Tangerine. Your little stow-away sure showed those silly border guards. I could understand if you were entering California from another country, but you are right, they are a little over the top there... Good job VT!!
