Terminated (but not Exterminated)

Until your status as an employee at {business} is resolved.

At least, that's what could have happened.

As I was going into work early the other morning (before 7 AM), I found myself locked out of the building. My badge wouldn't let me in the front doors. I called security to come let me in, and they told me I had been terminated as an employee.

I was incredulous. I didn't really know what to do, so I said, "I wasn't terminated yesterday." And the truth was, I knew they had to be wrong. But I didn't know what to do.

So, I called my boss (as the meeting I came early for was starting), and unsure of what to say, said simply, "Security thinks I'm terminated. I can't get in the front door."

Almost as soon as I hung up with my boss, the revolving front door began to open, so I slipped in. And even made it past the security checkpoint when Security arrived. They took my badge, and brought me back out to the front desk, on the other side of the security checkpoint. Luckily, my boss made it down to me (and Security) and explained to them that he had no knowledge of my termination--that he hadn't heard anything about it at all, so it had to be a mistake. (My thoughts exactly.)

They said, "Well, we'll activate her badge today, but you've got to take this up with HR. Otherwise, every day, her badge will be terminated."

At least now they were talking about my badge being terminated, not me. (Though, really, what's the difference? It's subtle, but comforting.) So Security escorted me (almost all the way) to my office, where I joined the conference call to take notes for our meeting.

After what was probably the longest 4-hour meeting of my life, my boss went up to talk to HR. Turns out they had no indication in any of their systems whatsoever that I should not be working at {place of business}. In fact, the only thing in their system about me was my hire date back in February 2009.

So why all the fuss? A glitch in the system. But at least I know for sure now that my boss wants to/is hoping to keep me on (which is very good news).

Guess I wasn't terminated after all. *Whew*

What an unsettling way to start your day! But I don't know what would be worse...thinking you got terminated, or that 4 hour meeting!

I am glad everything turned out ok. Security could have been a little more understanding though.

Whew! Glad Security wasn't packing heat! Especially since you were determined to creatively make your way to the meeting...you little rebel. I think you should take your camera back to the scene of the (almost) crime and get a photo with the Security guys!

That is incredibly stressful! What a weird and ironic way to achieve job security!

Bwhahahahahah!! I'm so sorry I am sure that was a scary and frustrating feeling... to be terminated without notice... But you have to admit it is hilarious. A great story you can laugh at for the rest of your life. At least I will... Security... walking you to your office... like some kind of possible terrorist. If only they knew you like I do. They never would have let you in!! Haha, just kidding. Glad it worked out.
