Of, in, or appropriate to spring: Vernal

or in other words, Happy Independence Day!

Since we couldn't make it to California for the 4th, Tyler and I headed out to Vernal to see my grandparents and attend the annual Richens Independence Day Family Feast, hosted by my great-uncle Ken and his wife Barbara (in Myton).

Check out how much meat we had!

(There was a whole other pole like this filled with chicken, and another with lamb and pork!--Though I don't think there was quite as much lamb or pork.)

Uncle Ken made homemade root beer:

(The hose wasn't quite long enough to reach the bucket. So Grandpa encouraged Ken to improvise. And Ken did. The root beer was delicious, by the way.)

We also saw some of the sights around Vernal.
Like a nature preserve in Ouray.

(Grandpa let us borrow his binoculars.)

Aren't my grandparents cute? (Kudos to Tyler for getting this great candid shot!)

We also went out to Ashley National Forest to see the sights, like the Green River (I think):

Overall, Tyler and I both really enjoyed the trip out there. We had a great time, and were sad that we couldn't stay for more than the weekend.

I'll post more pics later that show some of the incredible beauty in this country.

Many thanks to my wonderful grandparents for showing us such a good time!

Looks like you got the html working. Love your blog post. It's so cute. As are you.... are you getting skinnier??? I'm glad you had such a great time. Those are some beautiful pics of the area around Vernal. I had no idea all that was out there.

Mar, I wish! I just asked Tyler to take "skinny" pictures--as in, from the right angle.

And really, most everything we went to see was at least an hour or two away from Vernal, in different directions. So, we spent a lot of time in the car.

Be nice to Vernal, I was born there :). Actually I love all the outdoor things to there, fishing, boating, hunting, rock climbing, rappelling, whitewater rafting, and marveling at all the beauty of this earth. I am glad you had a good time.

I've been back several times now looking at these pictures and reading your post. What a blessing it is to be able to be a part of your holiday without being there :) Love it.

You and Tyler are looking pretty cute! So are your grandparents. :)

PS Did I also see the missionaries there? How wonderful.

Thanks so much for posting the update on your trip to Vernal! I love it. One of my favorite holiday traditions has been going to Uncle Ken's for the fourth. Over the years though, it has turned into a town party and not just a family celebration. It is so much fun! Did they have the traditional water fight at the end? (Grandpa Rich likes to leave before it gets started!)
We will have to make a greater effort to get there next year.
The photo of Grandpa and Grandma is fabulous! They do look so cute!
Oh, and they do like to "take long drives" together. :)
Glad you had a great time!
Love you!

Vernal sounds like heaven. Got me all interested in seeing this place now! Sorry I missed you guys at Jills. Not that I was invited, but still wished I could've met you first hand. I know I love Tyler & anyone Tyler loves, I love! LOL (he's gonna think I'm a nutty old lady, but that's ok. I still think mighty high thoughts of ya'll!)
