We have read some very good stuff so far this year. My favorite book, by far, has been The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I very highly recommend it.
I absolutely could not put the book down. It was that good.
However, before reading it, I recommend that you prepare yourself. It takes place in an apocalyptic world that has suffered some sort of major cataclysm which is never defined, but sounds a lot like Nuclear Winter. The story focuses on the journey of a father and son as they try to find somewhere they can go to find food, shelter, and safety.
Warning: the book does involve cannibalism (although, you never "witness" the cannibalism, you see evidences of it). And depending on how you read this novel, it may seem somewhat depressing.
BUT I don't feel like it was depressing. As one girl in my class said today, "the difference between what could be and what will never be is hope." I think that the novel ends with hope.
I'd be interested to see what you all think of it, if you get the chance to read it.
It's actually coming out in November in theaters. . . but as it is rated R, I'll probably never see it. (Unless I find an edited version somewhere.)
