Six Months!

I cannot believe that my little boy is six months old already.

That sounds so old to me. And yet, also, so very young. Sometimes I feel like Richie is a little boy, not a baby. But then sometimes, I remember that he really is still my baby boy--he's just not a newborn any more.

So what's new with our six month old boy?

Well, mainly we're working on sitting:

Rich definitely prefers being held. Or being swaddled. Or being on his tummy. Or his back. Or any other position where he's not sitting on his own.

But we're getting there. (Note how he becomes increasingly dissatisfied with sitting on his own.)

I was trying to get a picture of Richie smiling for the camera, but he still will not smile at the camera. At least, not really. Which stinks--cause seriously, this kid has the best smile. But you'll just have to take my word for it.

We've also tried introducing rice cereal to Richie, but he will not take it. In fact, as soon as he sees the spoon coming toward his mouth, he purses his lips and refuses to even give the spoon a try. And when he does allow the spoon in his mouth, he spits everything right back out. (I'm more than open to any suggestions here. Is he just not ready for solids yet? Is he being picky? Should I try giving him something else? Your thoughts/experiences welcome. I did read that sometimes you have to expose babies to something ten times before they'll eat it. I think we've tried 8 times. Discuss.)

We've also been showing Richie the snow. He was fascinated by it. (He's fascinated by the outside in general.)

This has been, what I gather to be, a very strange Logan winter. It really hasn't snowed very much or often while we've been here. I am totally okay with this, btw. I much prefer slightly warmer climes.

Tyler and I were finally able to go out (by ourselves) on a date. We went here:

To the beautiful Logan temple!

And while we went there ^, Richie hung out with Kim and Ryan and family.

We really appreciated the chance to go to the temple, and Richie seemed like he enjoyed his cousin time.

In other news, our boy is definitely teething. But still no teeth poking through yet. However, he drools (and spits) all over the place, and as of maybe yesterday or the day before, he is chewing on his tongue constantly.

As far as his length and weight goes-we'll try to get to a pediatrician soon for a six month check up.

And as for us, the Mom and Dad? We're having a blast with our little boy. And we love every minute we get with him. (Even when we're both sick--which we currently are. But hopefully we're on the mend!)

With my babies there was definitely a steep learning curve with solids and eating off of a spoon. I am no expert, but we are also starting to introduce solids around here. I would say make the rice cereal really thin at first. Then as he gets used to it and the spoon you can thicken it up. It is a huge mess for the first few weeks. We started Gracie on solids 2 weeks ago and it is still a giant mess every time, but slowly she is getting the hang of it. Also, don't stress about it. If he won't open his mouth at all, try again later. Good luck!

first of all wonderful post! Your Mom and I were just reading and laughing and wishing we were there. Be patient with teh cereal. As long as he is getting nourishment you are okay. One day he will eat it and love it. Normally it is teh texture of teh cereal compared to Mama milk that throws them off. I would make it more thin (runny) mixed with breast milk and gradully built up. The pictures are wonderful and we love you all so much. See you this summer! Hopefully Tyler and you have more dates.. you will need them. Tyler is doing an awesome job for me. I wanted to publicly thank him and you for all you do. Love Jay and Mom....

ps. I forgot this part.. I used to have a couple of my baby bottles desiganted for cereal and the rest for milk. These little guys are used to eating through nursing. and i would make the hole in the bottles nipple bigger to allow the thin cereal through and before long I had a cereal eater. You will see him nursing and swallowing differnt and then I would make it a tad thicker gradually and then to the spoon. Practice holding that spoon tight.. Sometimes he will knock it out of your hand and cereal will fly through the air.. fun times..

Now as for me.. well I was raised in Oklahoma and was nursed directly by a Prize winning cow in the barn and was eating steak before I could walk. But not all kids can do that.. I am kind of different. Bon Appetit Richie!

Have you tried mixing the cereal with some baby food bananas or peaches?? I would try some fruity baby food watered down a bit with a tad of baby cereal mixed in.

And does he sit at the table with you guys when you eat? I've been trying to postpone the baby food phase with calvary for as long as possible but it got to the point where she would scream at us all through meals because she wanted some, lol.

You could also try different spoons. Calvary hated the metal spoons at first.

I do remember some of my babies not ever liking the plain rice cereal. Since breast milk is sweet that is what they think food should be. At first anyway. If it's okay to try him on bananas I would mix a little mashed up banana with the cereal. Rarely is a child reactive or allergic to bananas. It's one of the safest and most perfect foods around. That's what they use to tell us anyway.

I remember Tyler would eat just about anything if I mixed it with sweet potatoes. I don't think that was one of his very first foods, but when we got to that one it was a winner.

Richie has grown since Christmas...I can tell...oh my he's cute!

I was so excited to see this post! In fact by the time I got to the end, I was tearing up. He is so darling! You are wonderful, Karen.
As far as the food goes, you have wonderful advice from everyone else and much of what I would say has already been posted. Smash LOVED solids from day one but he was messy - - and he is still messy to this day!
Each child is so different. I started my kids out a little earlier than 6 months on rice cereal, very runny rice cereal. And I did mix in some sweetness with it. Once he gets used to it, he will love feeling full.
I had learned that by 6 months you can give "tastes" to babies of regular food, just to introduce different things to them. I did that with all of mine. None of them had allergies, thankfully, and I stayed away from foods that most kids might be allergic to or foods that are not approved of for babies. But a little tiny taste on the tip of my finger didn't hurt them at all and most of the time they really liked it. Some of the faces they pulled were so funny!! (Great entertainment for parents). As you know, I do not have picky eaters. Not sure if that's the reason but I think it may have helped.

Back in the old days when Kim and Kris were babies, you could buy a bottle-shaped cereal feeder. One end was a nipple and the other end a plunger (really, I'm not joking). We just used a hot needle to make the nipple opening a little larger and then made the cereal a little soupier. The cereal vanished within a couple of minutes. Also, it never required the use of the plunger (a plunger sounds crazy I know).

Richie is really looking good. I'm sure he is a lot of fun. Enjoy every moment. Time just passes too fast. Hope to see you all soon.

Love, Den
