Snow already!

I surprised myself this morning by turning on the heater. I always try to put that day off as long as possible. But with a new baby, and cold rainy weather (that turned to snow!), I felt like turning on our heater was a pretty good option.

So what would you do on a gloomy and snowy day?

Well, if you were like me today, you'd send your (currently unemployed but busily looking for work) husband off to the store (to bulk up on some groceries).

Then you'd bundle up your cute baby and put him down for a nap. (Truthfully, he'd be sleeping anyway.)

Then you'd head into your kitchen to make your mom's baking soda biscuits.

(She can probably tell you where she got this recipe. But I don't know. So I'm giving my mom the credit for them.)

And in case you can't read my handwriting, here's the recipe transcribed:

2 c flour
3 tsp baking powder
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c shortening
2/3 c milk
(or 1/4 tsp baking soda and 3/4 c buttermilk)

1) Stir together dry ingredients.
2) Cut in shortening until it looks like coarse crumbs.
3) Make well in center and add milk.
4) Stir until dough clings together

Drop by tablespoonful on cookie sheet.
Bake 10-12 minutes at 450 degrees.

Trust me, these are so so good. They turn out so light and fluffy--they practically melt in your mouth.

And flavor-wise, I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but my mom always used butter-flavored Crisco, which is what she bought for me when she was last out here.

The only other thing I need to make this gloomy day into a cozy day? Some delicious hot chocolate--which I plan on sipping soon.

....baking powder biscuits. Not baking soda. I accidentally did that once if you recall...

Yeah. Weird that they are called baking soda biscuits but the recipe calls for baking powder.
