Job News

So after two years with Novell, my internship is coming to a close.

A couple local news outlets reported yesterday about the layoffs that have happened at Novell as a result of the completed acquisition of Novell by the Attachmate Group. The number of layoffs being reported is about 800 worldwide. How accurate that number is, I don't know.

What I do know, however, is that my boss, Brad, and all of his bosses were laid off. Unlike his bosses, however, Brad will be staying on until the end of May to help with the transition as our business unit is taken over by the Attachmate group.

When Brad let me know that he was a part of the layoffs, he also let me know that he had checked with HR to find out what would be happening to me. What he found out was that I wasn't even on the radar. (I think that comes from being an intern.) Essentially, I had fallen through the cracks. Brad said if I wanted, he could talk to one of his colleagues in Germany to see if he would want to keep me on in the new SUSE Business Unit that was being formed.

And while I appreciated the gesture, I felt like it would be best if I ended my internship when Brad ended his time at Novell. Tyler and I had previously decided that the sooner I could end my job, the better for me it would be--mainly because this pregnancy has been so tough for me. And while pregnancy-wise I am doing MUCH much better than I was during my first trimester, I still get tired out pretty easily, and for whatever reason, my job at Novell has really been tiring for me.

Anyway, our original plan had been that I would end my job in June, but after talking to Brad about a month ago, I had decided to stay on through July. (Even though I really didn't want to, it would have made things easier for Brad.) Except now, I'm ending in May. And I am totally okay with that.

In fact, I'm actually really excited to be ending my internship and start preparing for my little boy. Plus, we have some traveling we will be doing this summer before the baby comes.

So wish me luck with my last month. (And then wish me luck as I start learning how to be a housewife/stay-at-home mom!)

Dennis told me earlier today about the Novell layoffs and we were both wondering how it would affect you. We love your attitude. And we are hoping for a trip out our way soon.
