Basically, I have the best job ever!
Yesterday was so much fun. I had two great shifts.
The first shift, BYU catering was doing a banquet for the LDS philanthropies department in the brand new Hinckley Center. (The Hinckley building is beautiful, by the way. I love it!)
The banquet was for Sister Sorenson, whose husband recently died. He had been the wealthiest man in the state of Utah. When he died, he left all of his money to charity. his wife donated $4.5 million to BYU. So, this banquet was really nice.
The food was so good! It was cedar salmon with russet potatoes, asparagus, squash, and some other delicious green veggie. The dessert was my favorite! I think it is some custard deliciousness topped with strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Oh, sooooooo good! With Stoneground rolls. (Mmmmmmmmmm.....)
So I ate really well yesterday.
But the best part came when I was cleaning up after the banquet. Some of the guests were still chatting and taking pictures... Including President Samuelson. I was clearing near him, trying to stay out of the way of the guests, and be as inconspicuous as possible. But, he came up to me, and asked me, by name, how I was doing! (Okay, I was wearing a nametag... But it was still so cool!) At first, I didn't think he was talking to me, so he kind of poked me in the arm to let me know that it was indeed me that he was talking to. I'm sure that I looked like a doofus. But, it totally made my day. I love President Samuelson! And I've always wanted to meet him.
And now I have! (Sort of.....)
My second shift was a pretty easy one. The EFY kids were having a dance last night, and my job was to fill up cups of water as they danced so that they could cool off and be hydrated. (EFY kids are awesome, by the way.)
One boy, Tyler Brown, kept coming back and talking to us. It was pretty clear that he was not 100% comfortable out on the dance floor. I kept ragging on him, telling him to go dance with girls. He'd always have some excuse as to why he didn't need to be on the dance floor. Finally, I called one of the counselors over.
"Josh! Hi, this is Tyler. He needs to dance. Make him go dance with some girls!"
And what did Josh do? He stole Tyler's EFY badge, and told him that he would get it back after he danced with three girls.
So Tyler left.
While he was gone, we water cup fillers got a little bored, and so we got a little... constructive...
We built a water cup pyramid. It was so cool! The EFY kids LOVED it. They'd come back and tell us how awesome we were. They had, actually, been thanking us all night, telling us how grateful they were for their water. But our art REALLY impressed them. They even helped us build on it.
And when they asked whose idea it had been... we gave all the credit to Tyler. Some of us (me) gave out a description of Tyler to various girls and encouraged them to find the water pyramid kid and dance with him.
Eventually, Tyler returned, WITH his badge. I was so pleased. And proud.
And then a slow song came on. It had been one of my favorites at stake dances, so I started encouraging him to go ask a girl to dance.
And he asked me.
My captain, Scott, just laughed. And let me go.
So I danced! At an EFY dance! Hahaha... it was awesome. Tyler was a little awkward in his conversational abilities. But overall, I was impressed by his effort. He was definitely using the conversational tips I had given him.
Jason, one of my fellow water companions, came out to the dance floor with his camera phone and snapped a few photos. When we got back to campus after the dance, he and Scott made sure that people heard about our (my) night. And saw pictures.
I had such a good time. I probably had about as much fun as the EFY kids.
But anyway, I love my job. Great people, great food, great fun... what more can you ask for in life??

I'm so glad you have such a good job. I'm so proud of you trying to boost that boy's confidence. You never know what kind of impact you might have just had on him. I am sure that because of you a shy boy had a fabulous night. You're awesome!! PS, do you think you can get copies of those pics and post them for us?
I made a brief stop-in to your blog and saw "Tyler", figuring it was me you were speaking of. I read the entire entry and was sorely disappointed in the discovery that I had nothing to do with this entry. ...It is great, though, that you helped a young man who could benefit from what you did. ...I just recommend a change in approach to your blog. You can't just go around flinging the name Tyler every which way.
I appreciate your constructive criticism, however, I will not be using it. Thanks, though!
Wait, are you talking about me or about Tyler?? I totally want to see those pics!!
I am glad you have such a good group of people to work with, and that you get good food to eat. I know my all my daughters have been taught to maintain their own sense of self. I wouldn't ever want you to comprimise who you are to please anyone else. To thine own self be true.
I feel like I have been missing out on a blog party!
I love that you love your job. I love that you have a job. I love you!
